Human hair brushes are much more expensive than most of the other brushes you can buy. Artificial bristled brushes are the cheaper brushes and they tend to lose some of their bristles while you are painting. Brushes with sponges on the end are meant for seascapes and paintings that allow you to daub the baint and smear it rather than stroke it on. These tools have their uses when you are creating an angry sea or a stormy looking sky. They are not good for most other things you want to paint.

Canvases come in different sizes and they are made from different materials. The higher priced the canvas is the better quality materials were used to create it. Some of the cheaper canvases simply allow the paint to run instead of soaking the paint up and hold it in place. You must remember that most artists experiment with the different canvases until they find one brand that they like the most. Then they will purchase that brand repeatedly because they are accustomed to the way it handles the paint and they know what to expect.

In order for you to waste less canvas you should commit your idea to paper before you try and commit it to canvas. The paper drawing will be slightly different from the results you will get from the canvas version but you can get an idea of what you need to add or take away before you start putting it on canvas. Paper is forgiving and canvas is not.

Learn to take criticism without being personally offended by it. You will never make a successful artist if you cannot learn to allow people to criticize your work, and learn to accept the criticism for what it is. Criticism is the opinion of another person and is not necessarily true. Take it with a grain of salt.
